Taskforce prepares for the events of summer

by Jeff Hirst

Like sprouting crocuses and more daylight, here's a sure sign of spring: the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland is starting to provide information about its major warm-weather fundraising events.

Last year's benefit bash on the steamship William G. Mather was a winner, raising over $20,000 for AIDS support services. The Taskforce is inviting everyone to get on board for a second annual boat party, set for a Saturday in June. The Mather, a floating museum permanently anchored at North Coast Harbor, will again be the site for this event.

set for Sunday, September 24, starting and ending at Edgewater Park on Cleveland's lakefront.

Each of these events will be open to the general public.

Dancin' in the Streets, the 11th annual Taskforce-sponsored block party, will take place in mid-July. The location will again be Erieside Avenue behind Cleveland Municipal Stadium (the Browns stadium). This is one of the biggest gay and lesbian events of the year in Northern Ohio.

The fifth annual AIDS Walk Cleveland is

Volunteers are being sought for the Mather party and Dancin' in the Streets. Volunteer meetings will be held every other Wednesday, at 6 pm for Dancin' and 7:30 pm for the boat party. If you're interested in helping out with these events or any other Taskforce activities, please call Sue at the Taskforce, 216621-0766.

In other news, the Ohio Department of Health granted funding to enable the Taskforce to hire a second Gay Risk Reduction Specialist. Candidates are being interviewed for the position.

The health department also funded the Taskforce's Ujima Project, an AIDS/HIV prevention and education program for the African-American community. Grants under the program will start soon.
